Playing with fire

Thurnau – smoke detectors can save lives. "If you don't have one installed in your apartment or house, you're playing with fire", says district fire inspector siegfried zillig after the fire in thurnau, which killed an 81-year-old man on thursday due to smoke poisoning.

The fire in thurnau and the attempted arson in oberzettlitz have led to renewed discussion about the importance of smoke detectors. How important are these?
Siegfried zillig: without referring to the current fire, we know from many other incidents that smoke alarms save lives. They trigger the alarm at an early stage and wake up sleeping people. 70 percent of the 200,000 or so fires registered in germany each year occur at night. 95 percent of the people who die in fires do not die from burns, but from smoke poisoning, such as that caused by smoldering fires. If a smoke detector goes off, the chances of everything ending well are much greater.

The importance of smoke detectors is emphasized again and again, but many households are apparently not yet equipped with it. People don't take the issue seriously?
A certain carelessness can be observed. Those who do not deal with the subject are playing with fire. One must be aware that the senses of smell are not active during sleep. The sleeping person does not notice that there is a fire, is often only awake by noises that cause bursting windows, for example. Then it is often too late.

How many households do not have smoke detectors??
There are no reliable figures. Smoke detectors are already compulsory in new buildings and renovations. Old stock must be completely rebuilt by 2017. Who does not have fire detectors, should not wait however so long, but these best already today buy.

What do you have to invest to get a good smoke detector??
Smoke detectors are not expensive. They are available for as little as five euros. You should make sure that they carry the quality mark. Smoke detectors should at least be installed in all dormitories and escape and rescue routes. If you want to invest more, you can buy radio equipment. If a smoke detector goes off, all the others in the house will be drawn as well.

Smoke detectors must be maintained?
In the case of devices with a replaceable battery, the batteries must be replaced every one or two years. But there are also ten-year batteries. One should check the functionality monthly. If the measuring and test chambers are used up or dirty, the devices must be replaced.

Starting next week, european production plants of many automakers will be gradually shut down, including the VW group and all its brands, including volkswagen, audi, porsche and seat and others, daimler-benz and BMW. General motors and ford now also closing plants in the USA. Employees to be protected.

This has consequences for local suppliers: as of monday, the moll battery plant in bad staffelstein will also be closed down. Since wednesday, the company has been preparing for the closure. The 320 or so employees will receive short-time benefits, and only a small crew is still on site to accept remaining deliveries of goods, to look after parts of the production facilities and to make deliveries from stock. In addition, a production line is being kept in operation to manufacture batteries in small quantities for customers outside the auto industry.

Unclear situation

The situation at the automotive plants is unclear, and it is not yet clear how long the plants will actually have to close. "There are different statements", says managing director gertrud moll-mohrstedt. "We are in a dramatic situation."

Numerous arrests during nationwide strike in sudan

Opposition groups in sudan began a nationwide strike on sunday. They want to put pressure on the military transitional council to hand over power to a civilian government.

It is about a "peaceful form of resistance", the trade union confederation SPA announced on twitter. Only doctors and nurses were exempt from the general strike so that sick and injured people could continue to be treated.

Security forces arrested dozens of opposition supporters on sunday. Airport workers and employees of the central bank of sudan were taken away, their colleagues told the german press agency.

The strike follows the alleged arrest of two opposition supporters. The general secretary of the rebel group SPLM-N, ismail jallab, and their spokesman, mubarak ardol, were arrested a few hours after a meeting with the athiopian prime minister abiy ahmed on friday, according to international media reports. The reports, which were based on unnamed sources, do not love to verify independently at first.

Abiy tries to mediate between the military leadership and the opposition in the crisis in neighboring sudan. On friday, he met with the military transitional council and members of the opposition alliance FFC.

Last monday, security forces violently broke up a week-long sit-in in khartoum that had been instrumental in toppling the country’s long-time leader, omar al-bashir. According to a medical association, more than 100 people were killed and more than 500 were injured in the incident. Sudanese ministry of health gave the death toll as 61. Security forces continued to crack down on demonstrators in the days following the event.

President al-bashir, who had ruled the country with a heavy hand for three decades, was toppled by the forces of conflict in april. The coup was preceded by months of mass protests. Since then, the military and the opposition have struggled to form a transitional government.

Pope francis included sudanese in his prayers in peters square, rome, on sunday. "The news coming out of sudan these days is a source of pain and concern. Let us pray for this nation, that violence will cease and that dialogue will seek the common good," said the catholic leader.

100 percent for werner knaier

The CSU in wiesentheid is rustet for the elections next march.

The local association re-nominated incumbent werner knaier for mayor with 29 of 29 possible votes. At the same time, a list was drawn up for the town council with the aim of creating one more seat than the previous five in the town hall.

Together with the representatives of the christliche wahlergemeinschaft (CWG), the districts of geesdorf and reupelsdorf, and the young list WOW, knaier and the CSU currently have nine out of 17 votes at the council table. The CSU alone has six council members plus the mayor.

After more than two hours of looking back and looking ahead, knaier, the current mayor and renewed candidate, had reason to be satisfied. He thanked them for their trust in his person. He also has great confidence in his team. "We have a great list. I am pleased about this, but also that all five of the previous municipal councilors are running again," he said in conclusion.

Together, they want to continue to pull together and successfully defend the position of mayor, which the CSU has held for the first time in wiesentheid since 2008. In addition to the nomination as head of the town, knaier is at the top of the list for the town council, "to make the list strong," as he put it. Beforehand, the members of the board and the mayor himself had looked back on what had been achieved in wiesentheid in recent years.

There are many projects that have been initiated and begun. The task now is to move them forward, as CSU local chairman stefan mohringer, deputy helma schug, and state parliament member and municipal councilor otto hunnerkopf explained.

The construction of the relief road, the renovation of the steigerwaldhalle, the start of the urban development project, the village renewal in reupelsdorf and many other projects were mentioned. "What can a burgerblock candidate do better?? There's nothing there," said mohringer, referring to the other candidate. Heibt harald robner and is already nominated.

With werner knaier, they have "a mayor with rough edges", who works for his community with high pressure and heart and soul, helma schug described the head of the town. "Can't be done, doesn't exist for him, no matter at what time and on what date."The result of the nomination should and will give knaier a strong backbone. The incumbent spoke about his ideas for the coming years in wiesentheid. Knaier also commented on the accusation from the other side that too much is discussed in the non-public part of the council meetings. This is not more than with his predecessor walter hahn. The meetings were "so long because we do so much.".

He has many a vision that he wants to achieve with an energetic municipal council. "I would like to continue working with the same zeal, to develop wiesentheid further. Our list of council members includes all the candidates I think can do it," said knaier.

The candidates introduced themselves in detail and each named a focus for which they would like to work in the community.

guardrail cut down to 100 meters

On saturday shortly after midnight the rear left tire of a tractor unit burst. A tractor-trailer loaded with air freight was on its way to frankfurt. The 63-year-old greek truck driver had no chance to take corrective action. The tractor unit overturned and became wedged in the left lane with the trailer. Spilled diesel fuel spread on the opposite lane and seeped into the soil at the central guard rail. The fire departments of geiselwind and schlusselfeld supported the barrier removal and cleaning work.

For the duration of the salvage work, the highway had to be completely closed for a time. After the truck was salvaged, the water management office decided that the diesel-contaminated soil had to be dredged and disposed of. For this reason, the left lane remained closed until shortly before 3 p.M. The truck driver himself escaped with a minor shoulder injury. Fortunately, other road users remained unharmed, which is almost miraculous considering that the median barrier was depressed to 100 meters.

City appeals to motorists

Two damaged roads and an application for traffic calming were dealt with by the building committee of the eltmann city council at its meeting on monday afternoon. Once again it became clear that if motorists behaved according to the traffic regulations, there would be no need for many signs.

In the concrete case it concerns the ruckertstrabe in eltmann, a narrow residential street in eltmann. It’s a steep climb, and even when turning in, mayor michael ziegler (CSU) and the members of the construction committee had to drive carefully because the first parked car slowed down the driveway. A turning mull vehicle or also a rescue vehicle had had first problems. Further up, where the road runs parallel to the slope, there is almost continuous parking on one side. "Nobody in their right mind drives faster than 30 km/h, rather slower", said city councilor bruno wittig (CSU). Nevertheless, residents complain about speeding and would like to see the speed limit reduced to 30 kilometers per hour.

According to the city administration and the police, this is not really necessary and probably also not conducive to achieving the goal, because "if you drive too fast there, you don’t look at the signs", according to mayor michael ziegler. "After all, you always have to drive adapted within built-up areas and be able to stop at any time", he explained. In addition, the ruckertstrabe is only 4.60 meters wide in one section. Half-side parking is only permitted if there is a residual width of 3.05 meters for rescue vehicles and refuse collection – this is not the case here.

Committee members agreed that installing signs will not improve the situation. Because this topic is also raised again and again in many other residential streets, the mayor wants to address driving behavior in residential areas in general again in the newsletter.

The ruckert road also includes a stichstrabe, which again leads steeply uphill. The roadway is in poor condition and the cross gutter at the fub is compressed, undersized and therefore almost always clogged. This is how the water slides down to the limbacher strabe when it rains. The administration was instructed to examine a possible road rehabilitation; in any case, a heavy-load gutter must be installed at the mouth of the road.

The road "am ohrberg" is being rehabilitated, also steep and richly "blessed" with potholes. Burgermeister michael ziegler informed the committee that the tender was successful. It will cost around 54,000 euros to clear the surface and apply a new surface course.

Survival in the world war

"The air raids were so bad. We were terribly frightened and hid under the highway bridge at night", 83-year-old ilse foegelle from heiligenstadt tells the story. The senior citizen is on the board of the ebermannstadt seniors’ association "55 plus, who carries out some actions together with students of the middle school ebermannstadt.

This time teacher claudia engemann asked the chairman of the seniors’ representation, wolfgang mehrer, if a contemporary witness could tell something about the time around the second world war, since this was a topic in the history lessons. Ilse foegelle agreed to do so and told the attentively listening young people about her life.

The senior was born before the second world war and lived with her parents in a suburb of leipzig, engelsdorf. 1942 she came to school. "We have always witnessed the attacks on leipzig. Our village was not attacked, because here stood a crude military hospital with a crude red cross on the roof", ilse foegelle remembers.

To escape the war, the family moved to upper silesia for a year to live with relatives. But in 1944, with the help of russian prisoners, deep trenches were dug there, so that the family moved back to leipzig.

"We were afraid and slept at night in full monture. When the sirens went off we quickly went to the cellar. There were bunk beds with straw mattresses", tells the senior. In april 1945, the attacks were so bad that the family hid under a highway bridge at night. Visibly moved she remembers: "the sky was blood red. It was very, very bad."

Reports from the front

Unlike today, the family had only one radio back then. And that had also only two channels, on which was reported about the war. "The women then sat in front of the radio receivers and listened to the reports about the losses and whether their husbands and sons were there. They also always waited for mail to know that the manner was still alive", remembers the senior. Her mother always had a small bag with the most important documents ready to hand when she had to quickly seek shelter with the two children.

"In 1945, my father came back from the war wounded. His arm was shot through. My mother fell over the hedge at the funeral because she was so happy", reports ilse foegelle. When the russian army came to leipzig, her father was subjected to a number of repressive measures.

"He always tried to organize something edible for us. It was sometimes very dangerous and we were always afraid, the senior explains to the young listeners.

After the war, ilse foegelle attended another school until 1950. "It was then the GDR and I wanted to become a fashion designer. But it was not so easy. At the employment office, they wanted to offer me an apprenticeship as a locksmith or a mason, reports the senior. She was lucky and found an apprenticeship at the leipzig city library. "Everything was so fine. But I only had two dresses myself, she looks back.

Politics lesson in the GDR

Then there came a new boss who was an adherent of communism. So on mondays there was a political lesson and you were no longer allowed to voice your opinion. Ilse foegelle had to learn russian and read communist books.

"On vacation, my brother and I went to schwabach with my parents. My parents decided that we should stay here", tells the senior citizen. The parents went back to leipzig, where the father was arrested by the police. Later, her parents also came to schwabach. Ilse foegelle worked in a factory at the time and had to feed the family on her salary. Later she made a career in an international company.

Because of her experiences in childhood she appreciates her life today. After her testimony, the schoolchildren want to know whether she was ever not afraid, whether there were any substitutes or toys, and how she experienced the fall of the berlin wall. "There were no substitutes and no toys. And the fall of the wall was great", answers ilse foegelle and receives a bouquet of flowers from the schoolchildren.

The singer of the pop duo roxette, marie fredriksson, is dead. This is what your management said on tuesday. She died monday morning after battling cancer for 17 years. Fredriksson was 61 years old.

Fredriksson celebrated with songwriter per gessle as pop duo roxette from the 90s around the world successes. Already in 1986 their debut album "pearls of passion" made them stars in sweden. The international breakthrough followed in 1989 with the worldwide hit "the look. It was roxette’s first number one hit on the billboard charts.

"Joyride", "listen to your heart", "how do you do" or the ballad "it must have been love" from the soundtrack of the cult movie "pretty woman" belong to the great roxette songs of the 90s. According to a statement from fredriksson’s management, the pop duo sold a total of more than 80 million records.

In 2002 doctors diagnosed fredriksson with a brain tumor. But the singer with the short, blond hair recovered and, after several operations, was back on stage and touring the world again. After a long battle and a comeback tour, she retired from music for good in 2016 after 30 years when doctors advised her against further stress from touring and performing. In her biography "listen to my heart," the mother of two children confronts her illness. When she was diagnosed with cancer, "hell broke loose" for her, she wrote in it.

"Thank you marie, thank you for everything! You were a very special musician, a singer on a level that we will hardly experience again. You have painted my black-and-white songs with the most beautiful colors," wrote fredriksson’s roxette partner per gessle (60) in a message posted on twitter on tuesday.

"You were a very wonderful friend in over forty years. I am proud, honored and happy to have been able to share so much time with you, your talent, a warm, your coarseness and your humor," gessle continued to write.

In her swedish homeland, the grief over fredriksson’s death was great. Sweden’s prime minister stefan lofven wrote on facebook: "i remember the first time i heard her and thought: this voice is amazing."Fredriksson had been one of sweden’s most popular artists.

Also sweden’s king carl XVI. Gustaf shared his grief. "For many in our country, even in my own family, her music is closely connected with memories of particularly important hours in life," the king told the swedish newspaper "aftonbladet" through a spokeswoman. Fredriksson performed at the wedding of swedish crown princess victoria in 2010. Three years later she sang a love song at the wedding ceremony of princess madeleine.

Lungsick by e-cigarettes? U.S. authorities take action

The centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) reported 94 possible cases from late june to mid-august in 14 states. 30 cases have occurred in the state of wisconsin alone.

There was no conclusive evidence that infectious diseases had triggered the complaints, a CDC statement released saturday said.

Some cases among teens and young adults in all affected states are similar and appear to be linked to the use of e-cigarettes. More information is needed to determine the cause of the illnesses, the agency wrote.

"A connection is quite plausible," katrin schaller of the german cancer research center (DKFZ) in heidelberg told the german press agency on tuesday. Because e-cigarette users inhale aerosols, it is likely that the lungs are most affected. There have already been isolated reports in the literature of specific forms of pneumonia associated with the use of e-cigarettes.

"E-cigarettes are not harmless," tobacco control expert says. But assessing the health hazards of e-cigarettes is extremely difficult, schaller said. In the U.S. Traps, it is not known what people had used. There are major differences between e-cigarettes and thousands of liquids with flavors that are not known to have an effect on the lungs. The flavors are approved as food additives, but toxicological data for inhalation are lacking.

The U.S. Food and drug administration (FDA) had already tested a possible link between the occurrence of seizures and the use of e-cigarettes in the spring. The study involved 35 cases from the years 2010 to 2019.

In late june, san francisco had become the first city in the u.S. To announce it would ban the sale of e-cigarettes. According to this, the city wants to take action against the sale of e-cigarettes that do not have FDA approval.

athens plans early repayment of iwf loans

This was announced by the greek finance minister euklid tsakalotos with. "The debt to the IMF is too expensive. Just over five percent and we can now borrow money (on the money market) for about 3.4 percent," tsakalotos told radio station rthess 94.5 from thessaloniki.

IMF loans of around four billion euros are involved. "If you repay early, you gain money and then you can lower taxes," the finance minister added.

Greece still has to repay 9.5 billion euros to the IMF by 2024. The IMF had contributed nearly 32 billion euros to the greek bailout program since 2010. The largest part has already been repaid by the greeks.

Greece’s last austerity and reform program ended in august 2018. Athens has since been trying to stand on its own two feet again and borrow money from the capital market itself. On 5. March, the country was able to place a ten-year bond in the amount of 2.5 billion euros for the first time since 2010, albeit at a relatively high interest rate of 3.9 percent.
