Wettbewerbszentrale warns of more price cheating
"This goes right across all industries," said reiner munker, executive board member of the central office for combating unfair competition, in bad homburg on tuesday. As examples he mentioned cell phone contracts with hidden costs or advertisements for cell phones, which are only apparently reduced in price. Even banks did not always work transparently.
When advertising with prices, he said, there was cheating, either by concealing additional costs or by pretending to have savings that were not actually there. Some companies had referred to particularly high comparative prices which in fact did not exist.
On the other hand, fewer and fewer consumers complained about inconvenient advertising, such as unsolicited telephone calls from companies. The number of these complaints was halved to around 100 cases. About 400 complaints were made about prohibited e-mail advertising, and this number has not changed since the previous year.
There were almost 7,500 complaints about violations of information and labeling requirements, an increase of 4.5 percent. In total, the self-monitoring institution for fair competition handled 13,000 cases last year. This number has remained about the same for years.
In the vast majority of cases, the companies accepted the complaints, said munker. In around 700 cases, the central competition office conducted court proceedings because it was not possible to reach an out-of-court settlement. The antitrust enforcers mainly dealt with the healthcare industry, wholesalers and retailers, and internet auctioneers.
